You will find here, in Exo Chora, the oldest olive tree in Greece, which is said to be 2000 years old. It’s easy to spot the tree because its right on the corner junction of the main street. We parked the car and looked at it I think for half an hour, fascinated. We could help thinking the history this tree must have “seen”. The experience itself is mesmerizing! Renting a car is the best way to explore Zakynthos independently, but there are also taxis and buses available. Boat tours are a popular way to visit secluded beaches and coastal caves. So, getting around Zakynthos is relatively easy, with several transportation options available:

Travel by land:

• Car Rental: Renting a car is a popular choice for travelers who want the freedom to explore the island at their own pace. There are several car rental companies on the island, and driving is on the right side of the road. Sometimes we rented a car from the big rentals, they are better organized but more expensive. Nevertheless, renting from small local companies is the best. Greeks are pretty relaxed with regard to the car rentals. You have the freedom to make your plans regardless of their working hours. Anyway, since they don’t get up very early you can leave your car in the airport with the keys in a box in the car parking and that is enough. We rented by now more than 20 times cars like this and never ever had we a problem afterwards. This is one of the reasons that we visit Greece at least once a year – they are laid out people and excelent hosts, we really get to relax when we vacation on any island in Greece.
• Taxis: Taxis are widely available on Zakynthos and can be a convenient way to get around, especially for shorter trips or when traveling with a group.

Moreover, when you venture in a hike or even when you decide to go to the beach by foot, take plenty of water with you. The sun is hot and the air dry so you can get quickly dehydrated to the point of sun stroke!
• Respect the environment: Be mindful of your impact on the environment! Disposing of waste responsibly and avoiding activities that harm local flora and fauna.
• Be aware of surroundings: While it’s always wise to be mindful of your belongings in any crowded area, you can relax a bit more in Greece, particularly on the islands. Greeks are known for their vibrant nightlife, with people often enjoying themselves in clubs and tavernas late into the night. This creates a naturally lively atmosphere on the streets, offering a sense of security to visitors. However, it’s still important to practice basic safety precautions like keeping valuables secure, just as you would anywhere else.

Our family preference is to visit Zakynthos at the beginning of June, just as the peak season starts. At that time the island is lively but still quiet and the weather is nice without being overbearingly hot. The season starts in April and ends in October when the weather is warm and pleasant. The peak season is from June to August, with temperatures ranging from 70°F (21°C) to 89°F (32°C). During this time, the island is buzzing with activity. This way you will be able to enjoy the vibrant nightlife and numerous events, such as the Zakynthos International Music Festival (Shapes) in August.

If you prefer a quieter and more budget-friendly experience, consider visiting in the shoulder season from April to May or September to October. The weather is still warm, and you’ll have a better chance of finding great deals on accommodations and flights.

Before you decide which beaches to visit each morning, make sure to check a wind app, (we prefer windy!). This will help you choose a beach with or without waves, based on your preference. You cand check the wind direction – whether it’s blowing from the sea onto the land or vice versa. Don’t forget to keep an eye on the sheltered coves, as they can provide a more tranquil and enjoyable beach experience.

Tip 2 – go local:

Find the local tavernas and ask the waiter to recommend the freshly made, local dishes, or meal of the day as we call it. Zakynthos is a paradise for food lovers, offering a rich tapestry of flavors and dining experiences. Indulge in traditional Greek cuisine at local tavernas, where you can savor dishes like moussaka, souvlaki, and fresh seafood caught daily. • go diving on the the Shipwreck Beach. The wreck of the MV “Panagiotis,” has a fascinating history, shrouded in a veil of mystery and conflicting narratives.
• go diving in the Lost City! This lost city mistery was recently debunked. While initially thought to be an ancient city, underwater structures near Alykanas Bay are now confirmed to be natural geological formations created by gas leaks millions of years ago.
