Renting a car is the best way to explore Zakynthos independently, but there are also taxis and buses available. Boat tours are a popular way to visit secluded beaches and coastal caves. So, getting around Zakynthos is relatively easy, with several transportation options available:

Travel by land:

  • Car Rental: Renting a car is a popular choice for travelers who want the freedom to explore the island at their own pace. There are several car rental companies on the island, and driving is on the right side of the road. Sometimes we rented a car from the big rentals, they are better organized but more expensive. Nevertheless, renting from small local companies is the best. Greeks are pretty relaxed with regard to the car rentals. You have the freedom to make your plans regardless of their working hours. Anyway, since they don’t get up very early you can leave your car in the airport with the keys in a box in the car parking and that is enough. We rented by now more than 20 times cars like this and never ever had we a problem afterwards. This is one of the reasons that we visit Greece at least once a year – they are laid out people and excelent hosts, we really get to relax when we vacation on any island in Greece.
  • Taxis: Taxis are widely available on Zakynthos and can be a convenient way to get around, especially for shorter trips or when traveling with a group.
  • Public Transportation: The island has a public bus system that connects major towns and attractions, offering a budget-friendly way to get around.

In Greece, if you want to travel by boat – here too, you have multiple choices:

  1. Day Trippin’ in a Cozy Craft:Seeking a quick escape on the turquoise waters? Renting a small boat for a day or two is a fantastic option. These vessels are ideal for exploring nearby bays, secluded coves, and idyllic beaches accessible only by water. Perfect for a group of friends or a romantic adventure, these boats offer an affordable and easily manageable way to experience the magic of the Greek Islands from a unique perspective. No need for extensive boating experience, as many smaller rentals are straightforward to operate, and some might even come with brief instructions or tutorials.
  2. Island Hopping Adventures: Bigger Boats, Bigger Choices: For a more extensive exploration or a luxurious island-hopping adventure, consider renting a larger boat. These vessels offer greater range and comfort, allowing you to visit multiple islands and discover hidden gems at your own pace. The choice between a crew or going captain-less depends on your experience and preferences.
    • With a Crew: Opting for a crew unlocks a world of relaxation and personalized service. Expert navigators handle the technical aspects, allowing you to unwind and soak up the scenery. Additionally, experienced crews often possess local knowledge, recommending hidden coves, charming villages, and authentic dining experiences.
    • Captain Yourself (if qualified): For seasoned boaters, the freedom of navigating the Greek islands at your own pace can be an exhilarating experience. However, ensure you possess the necessary licenses and permits for the specific vessel you choose. Safety Tips for Visiting Zakynthos:

As with any travel destination, it’s important to take some basic safety precautions to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip:

  • Sun protection: Apply sunscreen regularly, especially during peak sun hours, and wear protective hats and sunglasses.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, particularly during hot weather and physical activity. Moreover, when you venture in a hike or even when you decide to go to the beach by foot, take plenty of water with you. The sun is hot and the air dry so you can get quickly dehydrated to the point of sun stroke!
  • Respect the environment: Be mindful of your impact on the environment! Disposing of waste responsibly and avoiding activities that harm local flora and fauna.
  • Be aware of surroundings: While it’s always wise to be mindful of your belongings in any crowded area, you can relax a bit more in Greece, particularly on the islands. Greeks are known for their vibrant nightlife, with people often enjoying themselves in clubs and tavernas late into the night. This creates a naturally lively atmosphere on the streets, offering a sense of security to visitors. However, it’s still important to practice basic safety precautions like keeping valuables secure, just as you would anywhere else.
  • Follow local laws and customs, including protection of wild life (Zakynthos has several turtoise sanctuaries directly on the beaches), beach safety regulations and dress codes for religious sites.
  • Keep an eye on weather and sea conditions, especially when participating in water sports or visiting remote beaches.

Traveling on a Budget in Zakynthos:

Zakynthos can be an affordable destination if you plan your trip carefully:

  • Consider the shoulder seasons (spring to autumn). Traveling during the shoulder seasons you will be able to avoid the crowds and high prices of peak travel times. It’s a great time to take advantage of the milder weather and still enjoy the beaches and the water. The sea water remains warm well into the fall, sometimes up to mid November.
  • Look for budget-friendly accommodation options, such as apartments or smaller hotels.
  • Take advantage of the island’s public transportation system or rent a scooter to get around.
  • Eat at local tavernas and street food stalls, which often offer delicious and inexpensive meals.
  • Visit free attractions, such as public beaches and historical sites, and take advantage of any discounts for students or seniors.

Best Time to Visit Zakynthos:

While Zakynthos welcomes visitors year-round, the ideal time for your trip depends on your preferences:

  • Peak Season (June-August): Experience the island at its most vibrant, with warm weather, lively activities, and buzzing nightlife. However, expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices.
  • Shoulder Seasons (April-May & September-October): Enjoy pleasant weather, smaller crowds, and more affordable prices. This is also a good time for hiking and outdoor activities.
  • Off-Season (November-March): Immerse yourself in the island’s peaceful atmosphere and serene landscapes. While some tourist services may be limited, you’ll encounter the lowest prices and an authentic local experience.

Our family preference is to visit Zakynthos at the beginning of June, just as the peak season starts. At that time the island is lively but still quiet and the weather is nice without being overbearingly hot. The season starts in April and ends in October when the weather is warm and pleasant. The peak season is from June to August, with temperatures ranging from 70°F (21°C) to 89°F (32°C). During this time, the island is buzzing with activity. This way you will be able to enjoy the vibrant nightlife and numerous events, such as the Zakynthos International Music Festival (Shapes) in August.

If you prefer a quieter and more budget-friendly experience, consider visiting in the shoulder season from April to May or September to October. The weather is still warm, and you’ll have a better chance of finding great deals on accommodations and flights.

Bonus tips:

Tip 1 – wind app:

Before you decide which beaches to visit each morning, make sure to check a wind app, (we prefer windy!). This will help you choose a beach with or without waves, based on your preference. You cand check the wind direction – whether it’s blowing from the sea onto the land or vice versa. Don’t forget to keep an eye on the sheltered coves, as they can provide a more tranquil and enjoyable beach experience.

Tip 2 – go local:

Find the local tavernas and ask the waiter to recommend the freshly made, local dishes, or meal of the day as we call it. Zakynthos is a paradise for food lovers, offering a rich tapestry of flavors and dining experiences. Indulge in traditional Greek cuisine at local tavernas, where you can savor dishes like moussaka, souvlaki, and fresh seafood caught daily. Don’t miss the opportunity to taste Zakynthian specialties like stuffed squid (thrapsala), rabbit stew (stifado), and local cheeses like ladotyri. Explore the island’s olive groves and vineyards, where you can sample olive oil and wines unique to Zakynthos. For a memorable dining experience, book a table at a seaside restaurant. This way, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Ionian Sea while dining on fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

Other tips:

  • if you have older children and you can enjoy night life, visit in August when the Music Festival takes place
  • if you a traveling with small children, wake up early. you will catch a milder sunt and have the beach to yourself.
  • visit the beaches with tortoises as an occasion to educate your children on wildlife, environment protection
  • go diving on the the Shipwreck Beach. The wreck of the MV “Panagiotis,” has a fascinating history, shrouded in a veil of mystery and conflicting narratives.
  • go diving in the Lost City! This lost city mistery was recently debunked. While initially thought to be an ancient city, underwater structures near Alykanas Bay are now confirmed to be natural geological formations created by gas leaks millions of years ago.
  • rent a scooter or a 4X4 as you would need it to access some of the more secluded beaches!

In conclusion, with its stunning beaches, rich history, and diverse attractions, this beautiful island is a must-visit destination for any traveler.
