I could not believe this place when I discovered it. I don’t know why it’s not so well known for tourists, but once you find it you will fall in love with it! Lefkada island is this amazing Greek island – like something out of a postcard. We visited it two times with our children and we’ve been having the best time here, relaxing on beautiful beaches and exploring all sorts of cool things. It was like stepping into a fairytale, with its stunning beaches and breathtaking views. The kids just loved it!
Moreover, the locals were so welcoming and friendly. You can spent your days exploring the hidden gems of the island, like the enchanting waterfalls of Nydri and the awe-inspiring Cape Lefkatas. And the beaches, oh my goodness! Porto Katsiki and Egremni are simply divine. We’d spend hours just lounging on the golden sands, watching the turquoise waves gently lap against the shore.
In the evenings, you can stroll through the quaint streets of Lefkada Town, trying out all sorts of delicious Greek dishes. And guess what? It is a culinary heaven too! And the local festivals were just the cherry on top – so much color, music, and dancing. It was a truly unforgettable experience for our family.

Is Lefkada very touristy?

That being said, Lefkada is not as crowded or touristy as some of the more famous Greek islands like Santorini or Mykonos. It still retains a more laid-back and authentic atmosphere, which many visitors appreciate.
How many days are enough in Lefkada?
The ideal number of days to spend in Lefkada largely depends on who you are with and why you go:
If you’re only adults or a family with bigger children, looking to explore the island’s stunning beaches and picturesque villages, a minimum of 3-4 days would be sufficient. This would give you enough time to visit popular attractions like Porto Katsiki, Egremni Beach, and the capital town of Lefkada.
However, if you want to delve deeper into the island’s culture or you are a family with younger children, looking to relax by the beach, consider spending at least 5-7 days in Lefkada. Although, if you want to come back relaxed from the vacation, 2 weeks would be ideal!
Is Lefkada a party island?
Lefkada is not typically considered a party island in the same vein as other Greek islands like Mykonos or Ios. While it does have a lively nightlife scene, especially in the main town of Lefkada and the resort areas of Nydri and Vasiliki, the overall atmosphere is more laid-back and family-friendly. Getting to Lefkada is relatively easy, with multiple transportation options available. The most convenient way to reach Lefkada is by flying into Aktion National Airport, located on the mainland near Preveza. From there, it’s just a short drive across the bridge connecting Lefkada to the mainland.
Nevertheless, if you prefer to travel by sea, there are ferry services that operate between Lefkada and other nearby islands, as well as mainland Greece. These ferries provide a scenic and leisurely way to reach the island, allowing you to soak in the beauty of the Ionian Sea along the way.
Once you’ve arrived in Lefkada, renting a car is highly recommended to explore the island at your own pace. The well-maintained road network makes it easy to navigate, and having a car gives you the freedom to visit the hidden gems and secluded beaches that Lefkada is known for. Beware, though, that as many Greek islands, this island favours even more the small 4X4 car types as it is basically a volcano cone and all beaches are a steep trip down from the top of a “mountain”.

You can access Milos Beach by boat from Agios Nikitas, or by foot passing through a scenic path on the hill. The reward? Breathtaking views from above before you descend to the beach.
Agios Ioannis Beach
A long stretch of golden sand with shallow waters, perfect for relaxing swims and water sports.
Kryoneri Beach
A hidden cove (shh!) with freshwater springs trickling into the sea, hence the unique water quality. Nicknamed “Secret Lovers’ Beach,” this tiny cove is accessible through a hidden path over a large rock. This secluded beach is perfect for those seeking a truly private getaway.
Ammoglossa Beach
A wonderful “sand tongue” (hence the name) up north. You could have a swim here after you visit the Castle and, if lucky, be practically alone.
Megali Petra Beach
This beach is a true hidden gem, accessible only by boat. With its crystal-clear waters and smooth pebbles, Megali Petra Beach is a perfect spot for relaxation.
Gialos Beach
A small, secluded beach located near the village of Kavalos. The beach is surrounded by lush vegetation and offers stunning views of the Ionian Sea. Keep in mind that since the beach is not accessible by road,you’ll need to hike down a short path to get there.
Afteli Beach
A small, secluded beach located near the village of Ligia. The beach is known for its crystal-clear waters and white pebbles. Keep in mind that there aren’t any amenities at Afteli Beach, so be sure to pack everything you need for a day of relaxation.

As is the case with many Greek islands, we have not only seen natural beauty in Lefkada. It is also an island with a rich history heritage and diverse cultures mixed beautifully. Explore Lefkada Town, the island’s capital, and take a stroll through its charming streets. The island is also known for its vibrant festivals and celebrations. Search upfront and see when the island’s festive occasions take place. In any case, if you go tracking though, make sure to have plenty of water with you since it can get really hot! I can’t stress it enough how much water you need to have with you when hiking in Greece in the summer – at least 2 liters per person for a trip of 3-5 hours!
More than that, Lefkada is also a popular destination for water sports, particularly wind and kite surfing. With its consistent winds and ideal conditions, Vassiliki Beach is a mecca for water sports enthusiasts. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced surfer, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to hit the waves and enjoy an adrenaline-filled adventure.

Most important, no trip to Lefkada is complete without indulging in the island’s delectable cuisine. I recommend go with the local tavernas for all meals. They are not expensive and even when they seam fat or heavy, you will never get seek from a local dish in Greece! Start your day with a traditional Greek breakfast, consisting of fresh bread, local cheeses, olives, and honey. For lunch or dinner, be sure to sample the island’s famous “Lentil Soup,” made with locally grown lentils, vegetables, and herbs.
Seafood lovers will be in paradise in Lefkada, with an abundance of fresh fish and seafood dishes to choose from. Don’t miss the opportunity to try “Bourdeto,” a spicy fish stew, or “Tiganites Marides,” fried small fish served with a squeeze of lemon.

Which side of Lefkada is better? Is Lefkas good for families?
For families with children, the east side of Lefkada is generally the better choice. As for the best time to visit Lefkada, that depends on your preferences and the activities you plan to do. Undeniably, the summer months of June to September offer warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine, perfect for beach lovers and water sports enthusiasts.
But if you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting in the shoulder seasons of spring (April to May) or autumn (October). So, during these months, the weather is still pleasant, and the island is less crowded, allowing you to explore at a more relaxed pace.
It’s worth noting that Lefkada can get quite busy during the peak summer months, especially in popular tourist areas. But if you prefer a more laid-back experience, consider visiting outside of July and August.
